A workshop for INDRUM2024 early career researchers:
Starting to write journal articles

In this workshop, we will set out from our recollections of the work we have each put towards producing a paper emerging from
our own doctoral work or co-authoring a paper with a doctoral student, and from what we have learnt about this process in the
interim years of our experience as (co)authors and supervisors! We will foster discussion on what potential challenges – and ways to overcome them – may emerge when preparing a manuscript for submission to a peer-reviewed mathematics education research journal.

Participants are kindly asked to prepare for this workshop as follows:

• As we will each (attempt to!) deconstruct the process through which papers emerging from a doctoral study come to be, read more closely the following two papers:
  • Paper 1 Reasoning About Solutions in Linear Algebra: the Case of Abraham and the Invertible Matrix Theorem is a paper that emerged from Megan Wawro’s dissertation work. Megan will discuss choices that arise when publishing a journal article from a broader study (such as a dissertation) and will provide suggestions for trying to focus on only a small set of cohesive and digestible results. She will complement this discussion with insights she has learnt about writing journal articles in the nine years since this paper was published.
  • Paper 2 Transition from School to University Mathematics: Manifestations of Unresolved Commognitive Conflict in First Year Students’ Examination Scripts is the first journal paper that emerged from the doctoral research of Athina Thoma and was co-authored with Elena Nardi (supervisor). Elena will address how its particular focus was carved out of the (then ongoing) doctoral study and how she and Athina worked together to mirror in it the larger study’s claims of originality, rigour and significance.
• Prepare a brief, maximum one slide, outline of a journal paper you are currently working on (or planning to work on!), including brief statements of:
  • the paper’s main point; and,
  • how you aim to establish the paper’s originality, significance, and rigour (theoretical and methodological).

This preparation is entirely optional, and we will aim to allocate time to as many Journal Paper Outlines as possible in thesecond part of the workshop.
